Can we have a world literary history?

Lecture by Professor Alexander Beecroft at Stockholm University on 1st December 2016, 3-5pm, D7 Södra husen.

Professor in Classics and Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina and author of An Ecology of World Literature (Verso, 2015), Alexander Beecroft will give this year's World Literature lecture at Stockholm University.

Abstract:

Can we have a world literary history?
Theories of world literature have proliferated rapidly in recent decades, as have anthologies of world literature for pedagogical purposes. But what about world literary history? Is it possible to create a narrative history of world literature, and if so, what would it look like? Would it be equivalent to the sum total of the world’s national literatures, or would it be something quite different? Can theories of world literature help us to understand how to write histories of world literature? This talk will explore the theoretical and practical considerations of writing global literary history in light of these questions.
